Walkout At NJ School After Teacher Allegedly Says ‘speak American’
Students at Cliffside Park High School in New Jersey walked out of class on Monday (October 16) after a video circulating online purports to show a teacher telling a class full of students to speak “American,” NBC reported.
A cell phone video taken by an 18-year-old student on October 12 appears to show the moment in which the teacher is heard telling students, “Military men and women are not fighting for your right to speak Spanish, they’re fighting for your right to speak American.”
The incident took place after two students were speaking to each other in Spanish about a sports team when the teacher chimed in with her remark, NBC reported, citing a student in the classroom at the time.
During the walkout, several students denounced the incident as disrespectful towards minority communities. Several students taking part in the demonstration were seen bearing the flags of several Latin American countries.
The school has said it is aware of the incident, but public school officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC news.
