New Jersey town saying goodbye to 600-year-old icon

New Jersey town saying goodbye to 600-year-old icon
Basking Ridge, New Jersey grew around a church that was built beside a tree 300 years ago. At that point the tree had already seen 300 years. But now experts say the oldest white oak in North America is destined to come down. Steve Hartman went “On the Road” to find out more.

I live in upstate new york and my neighbor had a tree the same size as this
one…. but they cut it down to put in an above ground pool that they never
use lol. it’s a shame. and nobody knew or gave a shit

What? We can put a man in space but we can’t preserve this beautiful old
tree? Coat it in bronze? Copper? Shellac? Something? Anything?

As a resident of Basking Ridge … A special thank you to CBS and Steve
Hartman for your eloquent report on our beloved tree.

I have good memories of this tree. We were homeschoolers and several of us
went to see the tree and we wrapped are arms around it! Good bye Beautiful
Oak Tree! sad to see you go!

That tree said “President Trump?” I”m out.

  • Ed Ochs

Can anyone tell me when it is officially coming down??

  • Chris Chiappetti

I grew up in Basking Ridge and went to this church when I was young. This
tree really was breathtaking when it had all of its leaves, held up by
wires and limbs toughing the ground. It anchored the center of town. Sad to
see it struggling and living out its last days.

Wouldn’t it be great if wood was distributed to woodturners. . .then bowls
can be donated to their local fund raising ? Food pantry. .the neighboring
church,. .etc.. I’m in ! Who can help me get some of this wood to make
permanent heirloom products that will forever commemorate the tree ? ? ?

Like the Wye Oak of Maryland. I remember when it came down. Very sad.

  • GETole

Sad. After tat, my next thought was they seem to have done a poor job of
trimming it back and getting rid of heavy lower branches. Of course, I
could be wrong. Sorry the tree is going.

  • Dawn Del Guercio

    Actually cried watching this.

  • vermin tky

going to see it this saturday .. :(

  • The Darci 13

That is truly sad……. I would hope that they would take the wood from
the tree and be able to make a beautiful tribute bench to be there in its
    place……

  • Mlogan11

Why can’t they take a small branch of that tree, and propagate it to start
    a new tree?

  • Edgar Masese

Take out the church and built it somewhere else that’ll solve the problem
    of the tree

  • Ed Olearczyk (Edward Francis James)

And we think nothing about a young human being ripped apart, dismembered
and forced from the womb. America has changed since those early days.
