Reading Horizons is an interactive computer courseware program developed for adults by HEC Software Inc. Combining basic phonetic reading skills with the latest technology, the program is designed for independent student use, especially for non-readers. It can effectively teach individuals, small groups or entire classes of students aged middle school through adult. The program has been used successfully in adult and youth corrections programs and in workplace and community literacy locations. It has also been used in junior and senior high schools, libraries, and by ESL students.
Reading Horizons uses the effective "Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself" reading system which is based on the 42 sounds of the alphabet, 5 phonetic skills, and 2 decoding skills. The reading system allows students to build a strong foundation for reading and spelling. The program provides students with the tools necessary to continue learning on their own. Upon completion, most students can decode multi-syllable words at an eighth grade level or beyond.
The Windows version of the courseware also provides a Mastery, Drill and Practice component that includes decoding, vocabulary development, and reading practice. Students can hear over 2400 words pronounced. They can also see and hear the definition for each word (including a graphic illustration where applicable), see and hear the words used in context sentences, decode the words, and read them within sentences and paragraphs.
