| The Von Steuben House at New Bridge Landing in River Edge, New Jersey is a Dutch Colonial house dating from 1752. General George Washington's army marched past the house as they crossed the Hackensack River as they retreated from Fort Lee in 1776. After the war, the house was confiscated from its owner, loyalist Jan Zabriskie given to Major-General Baron Von Steuben as a gift. It was acquired by the state of New Jersey and opened as a museum in 1939.
The house has so much fascinating history behind it, including its role in the American Revolution. It is great to have such a place so close to where I live. The river which passes by is also nice and there are some trees, and it is a very quiet and tranquil area where I like to go and think and reflect. I have not been in the house for years, and I believe it is still closed after being damaged in a flood. I do however have fond memories of going to the house as a kid. I enjoyed hearing an explanation of the house's history inside and seeing artifacts, and I even remember one time I was there they had some re-enactors who demonstrated a cannon being fired.
