New Jersey’s cities are filled with historic churches. As the place of worship for seven U.S. Presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, James Garfield, and Woodrow Wilson, St. James Chapel in Long Branch is a reflection of presidential history in New Jersey. In Newark, a small scale renovation saved St. Joseph’s from abandonment. No longer needed as a catholic church, St. Joseph’s was converted into a restaurant and office space for New Community Corporation. Others have not fared as well. The hilltop gothic church of St. John’s Episcopal in Jersey City remains empty, awaiting its fate.
