Jersey was the state that first made it possible
for a child to have two legally recognized parents
of the same sex. Larry Elardo and Mark Hoebee, after
having been together for 16 years, have adopted
a son. The birth mother selected the couple from
among dozens of others who responded to a notice
she had placed on the Web. Larry and Mark were present
at the birth of Stephen, now three years old. The
Hoebee-Elardo family resembles other straight families
in Maplewood, an affluent and liberal suburb of
New York City.

"It's very difficult being
Catholic, being gay, and being
a father. Those three don't seem
to go together." |
"As a couple you have a bond
that is stronger than anything
else because you are equally responsible
for this other life." |
"No one has the right to
say they are not leading a good,
wholesome life and giving this
child a wonderful family." |
