n
the area surrounding Bridgeton in South Jersey,
there has been a huge influx of Mexican immigrants
in the last decade, most working as migrant field
laborers. The Matias family is taking the first
steps to making it in the time-honored
American way. The father has gotten his drivers
license and drives a truck, the mother works in
an office, and their two younger daughters are doing
well in school. Language, culture, and education
affect their lives now and their hopes for the future.

"I think of my family as
a family with both cultures in
it." |
"We knew that working the
fields was very hard and we really
didn't want the same for our children."
|
"We had motivated our daughters
very much and demonstrated to
them that we could go to school
and be good students as well." |
