Voices of InnovationVoices of Innovation is a new series of conversations presented by the Rothman Institute at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Silberman College of Business. The program allows viewers to learn from industry leaders about best practices relating to innovation. With those insights, viewers can then understand how to successfully implement innovation at their workplaces. The series is hosted by James Barrood, Executive Director of the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies.

Kurus Elavia, CEO of Gateway Group One, started working for the company 19 years ago as a security guard. After earning graduate degrees in business from Bombay University in India, Elavia joined Gateway Security (later Gateway Group One) when it was an $11-million company. He steadily worked his way up the ranks to CEO, providing and executing the strategic plan that resulted in the growth of Gateway Security to approximately 4,000 employees and over $70 million in revenues.
Elavia was named one of NJBIZ’s 40 under 40 in 2004. In 2006, he was awarded the Asian American Leadership Award by the Asian American Association for Human Services. He is a member of the American Association of Airport Executives Training and Diversity Board.

John Bailye

In 1986, John Bailye established Dendrite International, Inc., to pioneer the development of software applications for pharmaceutical sales-force management. Originally based in Bailye’s native Australia, Dendrite’s headquarters was relocated to New Jersey in 1987. The company was sold last year to Cegedim, a French multinational.
During the last 20 years, Dendrite has grown from $175,000 in annual sales to more than $420 million in 2006, with 2,700 employees in 59 countries. Both Bailye and Dendrite have won wide industry recognition. Bailye received the John H. Martinson Technology Supporter Award from the New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC) in 2006, while Dendrite was inducted into NJTC’s prestigious Hall of Fame.
Bailye has been a strong supporter of entrepreneurship and technology growth in New Jersey and, through Dendrite, has served as a founding member and chairman of the NJTC. He also served as chairman of the Board of Overseers at Seton Hall University’s Whitehead School of Diplomacy and is a member of the Board of Trustees and Task Force Committee at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Greg Olsen

After an illustrious career as a research scientist and entrepreneur, Greg Olsen, president of GHO Ventures, manages his "angel" investments and speaks to student audiences - especially minorities and females - encouraging them to consider careers in science and engineering. In October 2005, Olsen became the third private citizen to orbit the earth on the International Space Station.
Olsen co-founded EPITAXX, a fiber-optic detector manufacturer in 1984, and sold it in 1990 for $12 million. In 1991, he co-founded Sensors Unlimited, a near-infrared camera manufacturer, which was sold for $600 million in 2000, repurchased by management two years later for $6 million, and resold in 2005 for $60 million.
Olsen holds 12 patents and has written over 100 technical papers. He is active in NJTC, the NJ Commission on Science and Technology and was the first recipient of the IEEE Aron Kressel award. Olsen received his BS, BSEE and MS in physics from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and was awarded his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Virginia. He is a Trustee at both universities.

Fred Hassan

Fred Hassan is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Schering-Plough Corporation. Prior to joining Schering-Plough in April 2003 and assuming his current position, Hassan was chairman and chief executive officer of Pharmacia Corporation. He joined the former Pharmacia & Upjohn in May 1997 as chief executive officer and was elected to the Board of Directors. In February 2001, Hassan was named chairman of the Board of Pharmacia, the company created through the merger of the former Monsanto and Pharmacia & Upjohn companies.
Previously, Hassan was executive vice president of Wyeth, formerly known as American Home Products, with responsibility for its pharmaceutical and medical products business. He was elected to Wyeth's Board of Directors in 1995. Earlier in his career, Hassan spent 17 years with Sandoz Pharmaceuticals (now Novartis) and headed its U.S. pharmaceuticals business.
