Urban Battles in Dance (3411)
In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, a young generation of dancers took over the streets. They were the masters of an art form that still survives and has established roots in Japan, Germany, France, Korea and Hungry. They are “Breakers” better known as B-boys and recently B-girls. They were the innovators of break dancing. Dancers like Michael Jackson and the music of James Brown brought the beat to a wide audience while movies like Flashdance, Wild Style, Beat Street and Breakin’ parts 1 and 2 drew the nation’s attention to the urban streets of New York, Chicago and California. Everyday different styles of dance were emerging on urban streets and back yards covered with card boards. Locking, Tutting, Boogaloo, Uprock and Liquid were only a few of the variations sparked by young men and woman trying to out do each other in dance wars. If you don’t remember these dances, or did them without knowing their names, maybe you remember Fred (Rerun) Barry who became famous with his own style on the popular television show “What’s Happening!” Join us as we travel down memory lane with stars of the golden age of urban battles in dance.
