African Americans are 13.4% of the U.S. population, but make up only 6% of law students. Latinos are nearly 15% of the U.S. population but represent less than 6% of the enrollment in law school.
On this edition of Due Process, the issue of diversity in legal education and how one Newark-based program, New Jersey Law and Education Empowerment Project (NJ LEEP), strives to introduce at-risk high school students to the legal profession and aims to offer opportunity where previously there was little or none.
Sandra King reports on the stories of two NJ LEEP students who prepare for their mock debate competition, while Raymond Brown hosts an in-studio debate with Junius Williams, Director of the Abbott Leadership Institute and former president of the National Bar Association, and Paula Tuffin, a former assistant U.S. Attorney, currently at Sills Cummis & Gross.
