Judge Robert Carter: Civil Rights Pioneer
Show #1204
In a rare opportunity to hear history from the source, Due Process features an exclusive interview with the man who may have been most responsible for the momentous decision: Brown v. Board of Education. He is New Jersey’s own Robert L. Carter who, at nearly 90, welcomed Sandra King to his home for an extended sit-down, marked by both his pride at what he helped accomplish – and his frustration at what remains undone. Carter had been first assistant to Thurgood Marshall, whom history records as the hero of Brown. But Carter, who would go on to become a U.S. District Court Judge, tells Sandy that he strategized and penned much of what was credited to Marshall – all in the name of breaking down racial barriers and ending American segregation. This special edition of Due Process closes with a commentary from show host and attorney Raymond Brown, who lends context to Carter’s charge that even 53 years after Brown, it is “white supremacy” that rules American life.
