Gender Equality in Sports
Show #1012

When 11-year-old Caitlin Alvaro signed up to play on a community basketball team in Bergen County, she didn’t expect to need an order from the State Civil Rights Division to join the boys on court. After all, it had been 23 years since a Hoboken girl, Maria Pepe, had broken the gender barrier in Little League. Can separate really be equal when it comes to sports and gender? That’s the focus for this edition of Due Process.

Studio Guests: Judy Weis, the former NOW President who brought the original Little League suit; Rev. John Rice, a former athlete and longtime coach, who opposes gender mixing on the playing field, and Joetta Clark Diggs, a four-time Olympian and one of the longtime stars of women’s track and field.
