McSuits
Show #1007
We are just too fat. In fact, Americans have been tipping the scales, in an increasing and alarming way, for the last 30 years … the same 30 years that the fast food industry has been changing the face of American food. But is it as simple as cause and effect … and, even if it is: does that translate into legal liability? This edition of Due Process explores the controversial lawsuits that blame fast food companies for obesity – especially in children. Sandy King’s mini-doc examines the case for – and against – the “McSuits,” with experts including “Fast Food Nation” author Eric Schlosser, and looks at a British case in which McDonald’s turned the tables and sued nutrition activists for libel. The debate continues in the studio with Raymond Brown’s studio guests: representing the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is Dr. Joel Fuhrman, an author and physician with a nutrition based practice, attorney Dale Florio who is a lobbyist for the New Jersey Restaurant Association and Dr. Karen Ensle, a nutritionist who specializes in causes and effects of obesity.
