There are millions of American grandmothers raising their children’s kids – tens of thousands right here in New Jersey – rather than see them in foster care or institutions. And many of them are poor. Still, the government help they are eligible for tends to be far less than that available to non-relative foster parents. So a national movement is afoot with an active component here in New Jersey. It’s already led to a “kinship care” law here, designed to help custodial grandparents with guardianship and financial assistance. So why are so few seeking help?
