Walk Across America –- Fourth graders at Meadowbrook Elementary School in Hillsdale learn about geography and health as they walk from New Jersey to California during a project called Walk Across America. School nurse Ann Deutsch runs this interdisciplinary project. The kids use pedometers on PE day and the miles that they walk are tracked on maps in the hallways.
Teacher for a Day – Teacher for a Day is a program that allows individuals from the community to experience an entire school day as a teacher. Community members walk a mile in a teacher’s shoes at Park Ridge High School. Under the watchful eye of a regular classroom teacher, guest teachers perform all the duties a teacher would do in a normal day.
Learning/Teaching Process – Maureen Davis, a social studies teacher at Cumberland Regional High School in Seabrook, teaches her students to think, instead of just memorizing for a test. By allowing the students to direct their learning environment, history becomes more relevant.
Teacher of the Year 2010 – Maryann Woods-Murphy is the 2010 New Jersey Teacher of the Year. The Spanish teacher at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale encourages her students to examine global issues from multiple perspectives. The teacher of the year also believes in mentoring, and is joined by her daughter, Melynda Bowie, who teaches at Emil Cavallini Middle School in Upper Saddle River.
