Paint the State Pink – Monongahela Middle School in Deptford is helping to Paint the State Pink! For the past three years, teacher Barbara Levin coordinates breast cancer fundraisers at her school. A sea of pink teachers, students, administrators and parents flood the school and form a human ribbon in honor of this event. Levin hopes to take the concept of Paint the Town Pink statewide.
Forward to the Past – Students from Roosevelt Elementary School in River Edge are raising money to preserve the 4,000 historic artifacts that were damaged in a flood. Working with the Bergen County Historical Society, the students - performing as colonial and modern day children - produce a video to help raise money for the project. Historic New Bridge Landing is the site of a pivotal bridge crossing where General George Washington led his troops from defeat, inspiring Thomas Paine to write his famous essay that began with “These are the times that try men’s souls.” For more information, go to bergencountyhistory.org.
Pumpkins – What can you learn from a pumpkin? Second grade students from Buckshutem Road Elementary School in Bridgeton learn about horticulture, math, art and language from pumpkins. They learn how to grow pumpkins, predict their size by the number of seeds, and to graph their results. The students also paint, carve and write about pumpkins.
Culinology® – Bergen County Technical High School in Teterboro is the only high school in the country to offer a Culinology® program. The program integrates the culinary arts and food science into one curriculum that teaches the discipline of Culinology®. Previously offered only on the undergraduate and professional level, Culinology® blends the two disciplines to address the need for relevant jobs in a tough economy environment. |
