Disability Awareness – Jean Czarkowski, a counselor at Raymond E. Voorhees Elementary School in Old Bridge, runs a Disability Awareness Day to give students a full understanding of people with physical and mental challenges. The theme this year is “Let our abilities Shine in 2009,” and the goal is to encourage children to focus on people’s abilities, not their disabilities.
ESL Homework Helper – Spanish speaking parents at Washington Avenue Elementary in Pleasantville are learning to master the English language. The ESL Homework Helper program gives parents strategies to improve their own English skills so they can become more involved in their child’s education. This program is funded through the NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education.
Multicultural Festival – Meadowbrook Elementary students take a trip around the world during a Multicultural Festival. The pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students in Hillsdale have their passports stamped as they travel from room to room visiting several different countries. Parents share their experiences from their native country in an effort to expose children to other cultures.
Juggling Life – Lou De Lauro, a fifth grade teacher at John P. Faber Elementary School in Dunellen, runs an after school juggling club and a volunteer program called Juggling Life. Juggling teaches the children structure, discipline and confidence. The Dunellen students teach juggling to youngsters with disabilities and serious illnesses. |
