Show #3Voices from the Land – Students from Alloway Township schools create outdoor art sculptures as part of the “Voices of the Land” Project. Students give their sculptures voice by writing prose or poetry about the sculpture. For more information about the project, go to http://www.eirc.org/website/Programs-+and+-Services/Monarch-Teacher-Network/Voices-Project.html.

Professional Learning Communities – Educators are often forced to teach in a bubble, with no spare time to collaborate with other teachers. In Vernon Township High School, teachers take an active role in improving student achievement by participating in teams to address the changing needs in the classroom. Through small work groups - professional learning communities - the teachers in this northern New Jersey community have more control over their teaching environment.

READ 180 - Teachers at John Marshall Elementary in Edison use READ 180, an intensive reading intervention program to meet the needs of students who are reading below grade level. Then the teachers use digital storytelling, a program taught by Kean University, to bring their stories to life.

Summer Splash – Families from Washington Avenue School in Pleasantville participate in a literacy project entitled “Summer Splash: a Literacy and Multi-media Experience.” The parents of third graders are given tools to encourage their children to read recreationally when school is not in session. This program is funded by a grant from the NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education.
