In the final episode of the season, Classroom Close-up, NJ will look back at highlights of the school year, from reinventing science, to learning from the past, to discovering how classrooms are impacted by current events, in particular, the election of the first African American president.
Sign of the Times – Today, President Obama faces tremendous challenges, such as the troubled economy, war and racism. He challenges young people to accept responsibility for their world. Teachers across the state join in that challenge, inspiring students to be accountable for their actions, as in a program entitled Men of Distinction, and to draw from lessons of the past through programs that feature the Tuskegee airmen and holocaust survivors.
Environment – The new administration is also taking on the challenge of protecting the environment while promoting corporate responsibility and sustainability. New Jersey schools are meeting this challenge by instilling in young people a sense of stewardship for their environment while helping them to prepare for the green collar jobs of tomorrow.
Heroes – At times of war, we face the sorrows of fallen heroes. But New Jersey public schools have always acknowledged the daily heroes – the teachers, the firemen, the police officers. Through school-wide peace day celebrations, students learn that they can make a difference by witnessing those heroes who came before them.
