Juggling Life - Lou De Lauro, a fifth grade teacher at John P. Faber Elementary School in Dunellen, runs an after-school juggling club and a volunteer program called Juggling Life. Juggling teaches the children structure, discipline and confidence. The Dunellen students teach juggling to youngsters with disabilities and serious illnesses.
Teddy Bear Clinic - Kindergartners from John Marshall Elementary School in Edison attend a Teddy Bear Clinic where nurses from St. Peters University Hospital in New Brunswick meet with the children to ease their fears of doctors and hospitals. The children bring teddy bears to the nurses to treat and heal them.
Oral Health Education - Norman S. Weir Elementary School in Paterson is one of five schools in Abbott (underserved) districts to receive a grant from Delta Dental Foundation for Oral Health Education. High School students from Harp Academy’s dental hygiene program teach the younger students in the district how to care for their teeth, and introduce them to the different jobs people do in a dental office. The money from the grant is used to address tooth decay, a disease that is increasing in children from low to moderate income households.
2009 Teacher of the Year - First-grade teacher Jeanne Muzi is the New Jersey Teacher of the Year. She teaches at Ben Franklin Elementary School in Lawrenceville and she has written and illustrated a children’s book called Sam’s Skates, through an NJEA program “You Write the Book.” She has been a member of the Gifted and Talented Task Force and a pilot teacher for the hands-on Math Out of the Box program. Jeanne believes in a hands-on, creative classroom environment where children are thinking, problem solving, and actively engaged.
