Heroes Garden – Students at Borough Elementary in Morris Plains honor several guests, including a WWII Purple Heart recipient, during a Veteran’s Day celebration. The tribute includes a stirring celebration in the student-created Heroes Garden, as a flag that once flew over the US Capitol is raised by Marine Corps Color Guard.
Hometown Heroes – They are living in our communities, maybe right next door. They are working to help others, to make the world a better place. They are role models, and their personal stories are a valuable learning opportunity for our children. The Forensics Club at Lincoln/Roosevelt School in Roxbury Township honors hometown heroes.
Thank A Veteran – Cherie Reid, a teacher at Howell Township Middle School, created a website that gives children the opportunity to thank a veteran. The website, www.kidsthankavet.com, has impacted her students, and also has touched the hearts of children and veterans across the country.
Toys for Tots – The student council at Heritage Middle School in Livingston holds a toy drive every holiday season in cooperation with the US Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. The family and consumer science and technology education classes made some of the toys that were donated.
