Tolerance Center – Teacher Kevin Stinson is the 2008 NJEA Martin Luther King Human Rights Award recipient for his Tolerance Center at Leonia High School. In addition to teaching a class entitled Tolerance and Acceptance, Stinson led students in the creation of murals and a peace garden, all of which promotes an atmosphere of compassion and acceptance in a diverse school community.

Turkeys 4UTurkeys 4U – For the past five years, students at Kinnelon High School in Montville have been participating in a community service event called Turkeys 4U. The students distribute hundreds of turkeys to needy families. State Board of Education member Debra Casha says this project teaches high school students about civic responsibility.

VFL – Students at Howell High School in Farmingdale play a new kind of football. It’s the Vocabulary Football League. This unique program is modeled after the NFL, and student ‘players' are drafted to NFL teams where they compete for points on their vocabulary tests. The strength of the VFL is that it encourages both cooperative learning through teamwork and individual achievement through competition.

What moves U? – Eli Manning, quarterback for the New York Giants, visits children at Hedgepeth-Williams School in Trenton to stress the importance of staying fit. As part of a program called What Moves U?, the Giants produced a Public Service Announcement featuring the Trenton children.
