Math-A-Thon – Both regular and special education students at Roosevelt School in Elizabeth participate in a math contest to earn money for a worthy cause - St. Jude Children's Hospital. The students use CD-Rom math games, websites, and other electronic tools to compete while honing their math skills. The students are not only inspired to love and enjoy math, they also learn about doing something good for others.
Heightened Response – Mount Olive Middle School students with a gift for music are making it possible for handicapped students, including autistic children, to appreciate music and to communicate with others through music. This program is funded through the NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education.
Bus Safety – Have you ever seen a car pass a school bus that has its yellow flashing light on? This is illegal and often has fatal consequences. Bus driver Bonnie Chalfant from Gloucester Township is working with the local police to educate the public about the hazards of not paying attention to yellow lights on school buses.
Children Designing & Engineering – Students at Spruce Run School in Clinton Township are putting on a play with shadow boxes. While it seems that this is just a project for fun and entertainment, it actually integrates some complicated math, science and technology skills. This is the Bright Ideas Playhouse, and it’s part of a Children Designing & Engineering project created by the College of New Jersey in collaboration with the New Jersey business community.
