Underground
RR Fourth graders at Indian Avenue Elementary
in Bridgeton are studying the history of the underground
railroads and the significance that quilts played in
telling the story. Two of the Seven Sisters, a group
that performs for New Jersey schools, shared the history
of quilt making and then helped the students make their
own quilts. For more about the Seven Sisters go to www.sevenquilts.com
McKinley
KID TV - Fourth and fifth graders run a news program
at McKinley School in Westfield that is so good it can
be seen on Channel 36, Westfield's public access channel.
The teachers have used creative funding from Exxon,
PTO and a local education grant to purchase the equipment.
This is a cross-curricular activity involving language
arts, math, music, art, research and higher level thinking.
Teacher
of the Year - New Jersey has named Elspeth Corrigan
Moore, a school librarian-media specialist at Memorial
High School in West New York, this year's teacher of
the year. Her main concerns are literacy and libraries.
She's excited about the additional funding for the poor
urban districts so they can improve their technology,
remedial programs, alternative education and preschool.
Testimony
- "Think. Wear your seatbelt and don't' drink and
drive because I don't want to see you in my emergency
room." That's what Dr. Susan Harding told
students at Duberson Alternate High School in Mays Landing.
The doctor showed graphic photos of patients who suffered
permanent physical trauma of "bad choices".
