Books
in the Park - During the summer, teachers in Franklin
Township brought books directly to families and children
in local parks. Apartment complex parks were turned
into an outdoor classroom for both the child and the
parents. Here the community could get books and books
on tape in both Spanish and English. This program is
funded through a grant from the NJEA Frederick L. Hipp
Foundation for Excellence in Education.
Senior
Dance - The cultural awareness club at Manchester
Township High School host a Senior Citizen Dinner and
Dance each year. The students taught the seniors some
new dances and both generations enjoyed conversation
and lots of laughs.
Hipp
- Teachers have wonderful ideas for the classroom, but
often the school districts don't have the money to fund
it. So members of NJEA used their own money to start
an educational grant program, and today it's grown into
one of the most coveted and successful grant programs
in the state of New Jersey. Two members who helped start
the program, Sue Maurer, a teacher at Wilson Elementary
School in Sayreville, and Diane Camiolo, a teacher at
Kingsway Regional Middle School in Glassboro, will explain
why they are so passionate about this grant program.
And see examples of some of the 170 projects that have
been awarded more than $678,000 in support since it
began nearly 10 years ago.
