Golf/Doby/Shabazz
(1227)
1)
Black golfers remember John Shippen, who sparked
controversy when he signed up to play in a golf
tournament in 1896. They also discuss the history
of black in golf, a tale of racism, discrimination
and segregation. This is followed by a look at
The LPGA Urban Youth Golf Program in Atlantic
City. Designed to expose urban youth to the game
of golf, the program gives free instruction, equipment
and course access to the less fortunate. 2) Next,
a profile of the accomplishments of July 1998
Hall of Fame inductee Larry Doby. It was only
11 weeks after Jackie Robinson broke the color
barrier of the major leagues that Doby also crossed
the line. 3) Last, we reflect on the life, strength
and legacy of Dr. Betty Shabazz, wife of the late
Malcolm X. In this very emotional tribute you'll
hear from co-workers, close friends, well-known
others, and Betty herself at her last NJ speaking
engagement before her tragic death.
