Another View sets the stage for mix of poetic powerhouses who will showcase their talents on Another View’s Spoken Word Café. The line up includes performances by gifted Spoken Word Artists who are not only dynamic on stage but also give back to the community as educators and activists. All of the performers will discuss their life in the poetry scene and how they give back to the community.
Helena D. Lewis is a favorite on the spoken word scene with her passionate and witty performances. Through her poetry she showcases a wide range of talent about real life experiences. Lewis talks about her career as an award winning Spoken Word Artist and how she gives back to the community as a drug and HIV/AIDS health educator. She also discusses the Newark based drop-in center for drug-addicted prostitutes that she developed.
Narubi Selah has been blessing the mic since she was nine years old and has been dazzling audiences ever since. She has appeared on stage with Lauryn Hill and performed at the Essence Music Festival alongside Iyanla Vanzant and Tavis Smiley. Her performances are filled with colorful social commentary. In addition to performing and recording her CD’s, Narubi will share her experiences as a fourth grade teacher in Trenton, New Jersey.
Rob Hylton also graces the show with his unique voice. After writing for years, he was encouraged to perform at the African Globe Theater’s poetry night in Newark in 1995 and his spoken word career quickly began. Hylton is a slam winner at the world famous Nuyorican Soul Cafe in New York and the first runner up in the annual NJ Slam Competition at Serengeti Plains. Hylton shares his thoughts about being an English teacher at Weequahic High School where he also runs the school’s popular Poetry Club.
Spoken Word combines the traditional forms of oral and written poetry, and the reward is a fresh multi-media experience for eye and ear. As a special feature to the Another View series, the Spoken Word Café welcomes guests from around the country and highlights the artistry of the spoken word.
