The Written Word (1505)

Initial Air Dates:
Tuesday, October 15, 2001

This edition enters the literary community and introduces viewers to two first-time authors.

The first book off the Another View Bookshelf is the novel Black Coffee by New Jersey native Tracey Price Thompson. The story takes place on a military base with two people who find themselves in love and up against some very strict military policies. A highly decorated Desert storm veteran herself, Price-Thompson says the characters are made up, but the situations they face are very real.

The next author hails from the streets of Philadelphia. Mat Johnson, author of the novel "Drop," grew up in Philadelphia and writes the tale of Christopher Jones, a man who tries to escape his roots in the Philadelphia streets, believing that the streets have stifled his accomplishments. It's a story of race, class and the inner struggle that gives the phrase "city of brotherly love".. .a brand new meaning.

Discussion will also cover the areas of self-publishing, marketing, and the quest for that lucrative book deal.
