Lessons
in Jazz (1415)
(not available for purchase)
Our
guests take a look back at what jazz was like
in New Jersey and its contributions to the art
form. We start by presenting a short video produced
by Tom Guy for the NJ Historical Society. It's
called "I Heard Tell: A Portrait of Newark's
Jazz Legacy 1920s to 1950s." The Newark jazz
scene of that time is revisited through interviews
with Amiri Baraka, musician Hal Mitchell and Viola
Wells (Miss Rhapsody). Then guests discuss past
NJ jazz artists, how jazz has evolved and it's
influence on each of them. They also discuss the
Ken Burns documentary "Jazz."
