Linda
L. Coles is executive producer of Another
View, NJN’s award-winning public
affairs program serving New Jersey’s
diverse African American community.
Coles
has more than 20 years experience in the broadcasting
industry concentrating primarily on news and
public affairs programming. Her work has received
numerous regional Emmy nominations from the
Philadelphia Chapter of the National
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences,
has been cited by the New Jersey Press
Broadcasters Association, the Garden State
Association of Black Journalists and is the
recipient of the 2004 and 2005 Unity Award
in Media.
Most
recently Coles’ award winning documentary
on civil rights activist Fannie Lou
Hamer was distributed nationally through PBS.
Coles
served as a staff producer at NJN from 1985
to 1993, where she focused on political segments,
minority affairs and news packages for NJN
NEWS and Another View.
In
1993, Coles joined KYW-TV3 in Philadelphia
as a producer of the public affairs programs,
Square Off, and the weekly Philadelphia Saturday
Tribune. Coles played a key role in the expansion
of KYW’s weekend news programming.
Coles
returned to NJN as executive producer of Another
View in 1997.
In
her current position she has broadened the
focus of Another View by producing programming
that addresses issues of cultural sensitivity
and ethnic diversity.
A native New Jerseyan, she serves on the Governing Board of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Philadelphia Chapter, and has represented NJN as a panelist at numerous workshops and conferences including the 2004 PBS Development Conference in Orlando, Florida. That year she was also selected to participate in the CPB/PBS Producers academy. More than 230 applications were received. Candidates were evaluated by representatives of CPB and PBS. The 20 recipients were chosen based on their work experience, particularly as it applied to public television; their stated professional goals; the strength of their storytelling skills, as demonstrated in their video presentation; the depth of experience; the applicants’ current production projects, and the recommendations received.
Coles is a graduate of Rutgers University. She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and currently serves as Vice President of the Garden State Association of Black Journalists. She enjoys mentoring students and has served as an adjunct professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
