Underground
Railroad
This
Another View
special is a half hour program that explores how the Underground
Railroad operated in New Jersey. As a crucial point of entry for
slaves escaping along the eastern corridor, New Jersey was important
in the Underground Railroad network.
This program will take
a look at the newly published New Jersey Historical Commission Guide
to the Underground Railroad that identifies specific locations and
structures in New Jersey considered to be Underground Railroad sites.
One of these sites is the backdrop for this Another
View special. The Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church
in Camden is that city's oldest black institution and, as such,
played a prominent role in helping slaves obtain their freedom.
Experts
interviewed include Giles Wright, Director, Afro-American History
Program New Jersey Historical Commission; Dr. Spencer Crew, Executive
Director of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in
Cincinnati; and Dorothy Lipscomb, President & Founder of the
Macedonia AME Church Historical Committee.
News veteran Candace
Kelley Matlock is the program's host.
