When former Governor Thomas H. Kean was named Co-Chairman of the 9/11 Commission, his goal was to discover the truth surrounding this shocking event in American history and to share the lessons the Commission learned with the President and the United States Congress. This past summer, Governor Kean spoke about those powerful insights to a group of educators and leaders in the field at a conference entitled “Learning from the Challenge of Our Time: 9/11. Terrorism and the Classroom.” This event has launched a year long initiative to develop a curriculum and resources to help teach the lessons of 9/11. NJN News Senior Anchor Kent Manahan introduces the program.

The day-long conference featuring Governor Kean was sponsored by the Liberty Science Center, Families of September 11, Inc., and the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education.

In his lecture, Governor Kean encouraged educators to teach the many lessons of 9/11 – from tragedy to triumph, especially the countless and remarkable examples of human spirit and kindness displayed by people across the nation. “This event changed our time; it changed our world. We must teach the lessons from this day with sensitivity. We must teach our students about the extraordinary response of that day – that out of trauma and tragedy came the most remarkable things. Tell the story of the individual Americans who came together with a sense of purpose and used this tragedy to transform this country,” Governor Kean said.
