Only A Game, hosted by author and veteran NPR commentator Bill Littlefield, is a weekly one-hour radio sports magazine that appeals to sports fans and sports avoiders alike. The program, crafted to lead into Weekend Edition Saturday with Scott Simon, is characterized by Littlefield's exceptional writing and affable personality. On each program, Littlefield recognizes the significance of sports in our culture but keeps our games in perspective. And he does it in a way that balances the drama, comedy, and poetry of athletics.

Only A Game maintains a strong on-the-scene presence to provide listeners with a sound-rich, weekly tour of the world of sports. The program covers diverse stories and issues concerning gender, race, sexual orientation, competitive opportunities for the disabled and the relationship between sports and the economy. Contributing analysts include Tim Kurkjian, Bud Collins, Gregg Doyel, Helene Elliott, Dan Wetzel, Pat Forde and weekly sports guru Charlie Pierce, for whom all subjects and topics are open game. Balancing thorough coverage of big time pro and college sports are features on such offbeat competitions as Humans Vs. Zombies, the Santa Speedo Run, biathlon and rhythmic gymnastics.

Guests on Only A Game have included Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, late writers John Updike and W.C. Heinz, as well as athletes Muhammed Ali, Jeff Gordon, Annika Sorenstam, Yogi Berra, Pat Summitt, Phil Esposito, Martina Navratilova, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Usain Bolt, Katarina Witt and Bill Russell.

Rounding out the mix are commentaries by Littlefield and guest writers, skits, parodies, songs from Only A Game's voluminous Sports Music Library and poetry ("doggerel," as Littlefield proudly refers to it).
