The Learning Triangle says that to make the best use of television, we should connect it with books and related activities.
Using the LEARNING TRIANGLE in four easy steps:
- Start with a theme. What are your children interested in? Dinosaurs. Fairy tales. Puppies. Rocket ships. What do you want to teach them? Self-esteem. Cooperation. Love of nature. How to prepare for school?
- Then watch a program featuring that theme. Use it as an opportunity to ask questions, discuss issues, relate the theme to your children’s interest or concerns.
- Then build on those questions and concerns by reading one or more books on the theme.
- Finally, make sure they really get it by giving them some hands-on learning experiences. Connect the viewing and reading to related activities.
As children explore a theme in different ways, they begin to construct their own understanding of it – in other words, they learn in a deep and personal way.
