Children learn to identify two-dimensional shapes by their attributes, namely by the number of sides and corners. They learn to use those attributes to identify shapes regardless of size, color, or orientation. They learn that squares are a special type of rectangle. Children search for and identify examples of three-dimensional shapes in their classrooms. Also, lines of symmetry are explored as the children match symmetrical halves of pictures.
