WHAT ARE NUMBERS?

What Are Numbers? covers three major topics. It covers the counting sequence, using numbers to tell how many objects are in a set (cardinality), and the use of ordinal numbers to identify the position of an object in a line or of an event in a sequence of events (ordinality).

To learn the counting sequence, body movements are incorporated into activities to help children have fun while learning to recognize the repeating pattern of the ones digits combined with the decades (tens). Through various “hands on” activities, children then use numbers to identify the number of objects in a group. They learn that size, shape, color, and physical arrangement do not matter, and the last number counted tells the total number in the group. For ordinal numbers, children learn through various fun activities that position depends upon the point of view. They are given opportunities to explore ordinal positions from different points of view to see how they can change.
