INTRODUCTION

Big Math for Little Kids (BMLK) is an early childhood curriculum developed with funding from the National Science Foundation to provide young children with a developmentally appropriate and research-based curriculum that would help prepare them for elementary school.

Research has shown that children enjoy mathematics and will spontaneously engage in mathematical activity during their play.  Research has also shown that young children possess some very competent mathematical understanding and strategies, but have difficulty expressing their thinking in words.  Also, children can learn a great deal when they are given opportunities to explore mathematical ideas with adult guidance.  (more)

One of the developers of the Big Math for Little Kids curriculum is Herbert P. Ginsburg, the Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University.  For many years, he has conducted research, both nationally and internationally, on cognitive development, particularly the development of children's mathematical thinking.

He has written numerous books about children’s mathematical thinking and has developed tests for assessing children’s mathematical thinking, in addition to developing the Big Math for Little Kids curriculum.
