Dr.
Felissa Lashley, RN, Dean, Rutgers University
College of Nursing
Felissa R. Lashley (formerly Cohen) is professor
and Dean of the College of Nursing at Rutgers,
The State University of New Jersey, an appointment
she assumed in November, 2002 as well as interim
director of the Nursing Center for Bioterrorism
and Emerging Infectious Diseases Preparedness.
Immediately prior to this appointment she was professor
and Dean of the School of Nursing, Southern Illinois
University Edwardsville from 1995-2002. She also
was a clinical professor of pediatrics at the SIU
School of Medicine. Before taking that position
she was professor and Head of the Department of
Medical-Surgical Nursing at the University of Illinois
at Chicago College of Nursing, Clinical Chief for
Medical-Surgical Nursing at the University of Illinois
Hospital and Clinics, and director of the Center
for Narcolepsy. She received her BS, RN from Adelphi
College, her MA in medical surgical nursing/higher
education from New York University and her PhD
from Illinois State University in human genetics.
She has a certificate in medical genetics from
Jackson Laboratories.
Dr. Lashley is certified as a PhD medical geneticist
by the American Board of Medical Genetics (the
first nurse to be so certified), is an AIDS certified
registered nurse, and is a founding fellow of the
American College of Medical Genetics. She began
providing clinical genetic services and genetic
counseling in 1973. She is a fellow of the American
Academy of Nursing.
Dr. Lashley has authored more than 300 publications,
and has presented nationally and internationally
on a variety of topics, most recently at Yamaguchi
University in Ube, Japan. The first and second
editions of her book, Clinical Genetics in Nursing
Practice, received Book of the Year Awards from
the American Journal of Nursing. Three of her other
books have won AJN Book of the Year awards: The
Person with AIDS: Nursing Perspectives (Durham
and Cohen, Eds), Women, Children and HIV/AIDS (Cohen
and Durham), and Emerging Infectious Diseases:
Trends and Issues (Lashley and Durham) (which was
also a Choice awardee) while Tuberculosis: A Sourcebook
for Nursing Practice (Cohen and Durham) won a Book
of the Year Award from the Nurse Practitioner journal.
She created a webpage for nurses to share biopreparedness
and emerging infectious diseases information, and
initiated an annual interdisciplinary conference
on emerging infectious diseases.Dr. Lashley has
over 350 presentations, most recently on emerging
infectious diseases and avian influenza. She has
been interviewed on avian influenza for television,
radio, newspapers, and most recently, Oprah Winfrey=s
magazine, the AO@ (June, 2006).
Dr. Lashley has received several million dollars
in external research funding. Dr. Lashley has long
experience as a grant reviewer and was a member
of the charter AIDS Research Review Committee,
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease,
National Institutes of Health (NIH). She has been
an invited member of a number of research advisory
groups at National Institutes of Health. She was
a member of the NIH consensus panel on Phenylketonuria:
Screening and Management.
Dr. Lashley received the 2000 Research Recognition
Award for Outstanding Research from the Association
of Nurses in AIDS Care, and was member of the year
for SLANAC in 2002. In March, 2003 she received
the distinguished alumni award from Illinois State
University, and in 2005 was initiated into their
Hall of Fame. In 1999, she received the Distinguished
Nurse Research Award from the Illinois Nurses Association.
Dr. Lashley received an Exxon Education Foundation
Innovation Award in 1996 for her paper on Integrating
Genetics into College Nursing Curricula. She also
received the SAGE award for mentoring nurse leaders
in 2001 from the Illinois Leadership Institute.
She is a distinguished lecturer for Sigma Theta
Tau, International, and was an associate editor
of the journal, IMAGE: The Journal of Nursing Scholarship.
She is a member of the editorial boards of AIDS
Education and Prevention, Nursing and Health Sciences,
and Biological Research In Nursing. She is a member
of the Board of Directors of Robert Wood Johnson
University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, and of
the statewide NJ MEDPREP committee. She has been
selected as a Awoman of excellence@ by the New
Jersey Women In AIDS Network.
Ruben Fernandez, RN, BSN, MA, Chief Nursing Officer,
Palisades General Medical Center
Mr. Ruben D. Fernandez currently serves as the
Vice President for Patient Care Services at Palisades
Medical Center in North Bergen, New Jersey. Palisades
is a community hospital and part of the New York
Presbyterian Healthcare System.
Mr. Fernandez has over 20 years in senior leadership
having served most recently as the Vice President
of Patient Care Services at North General Hospital
in Harlem, NYC and prior to that as the Associate
Dean for Administration at the College of Nursing
at Rutgers, Newark. Mr. Fernandez has been responsible
for creating and facilitating many work redesign
initiatives that have empowered the staff in the
various departments that he has led through innovation
in practice, the implementation of theory-based
practice models, as well developing leadership
development programs to enhance the practice of
the management staff, as well as implementing organizational
systems to enhance patient care.
Mr. Fernandez received a BSN from Seton Hall University
(1975) and a Master in Nursing Administration from
NYU (1982). Mr. Fernandez is in the PHD program
in Nursing at Seton Hall University. Mr. Fernandez
has been honored and recognized for his contribution
to nursing by various entities. He was the recipient
of the Margaret C. Haley Award, Distinguished Alumni,
Seton Hall University 1993; The Agnes and Rosemary
Ludden Award for Innovative Nursing Practice, New
York, University, 1991; Honor Roll for Men in Nursing,
National Nursing Museum, University of Texas School
of Nursing, Austin Texas, 1995; The Don Award,
New Jersey Institute for Nursing, 1999, and the
Seton Hall University Hall of Honor, 2000, among
many.
He is the author of numerous articles in nursing
practice and nursing management. He is actively
involved in various organizations at the State
and National level. He serves as a surveyor for
the American Nurses Association Credentialing Center
Magnet Recognition Program and has presented numerous
papers and lectured at the State and National level.
Linda Parry Carney, RN, BSN, MS, Immediate Past
President, NJ State Nurses Association
Linda Parry Carney is the Immediate Past President
of the New Jersey State Nurses’ Association.
Linda has served in a number of other elected positions
in the New Jersey State Nurses’ Association
(NJSNA) including President of its non-profit foundation,
The Institute For Nursing. She is also one of the
New Jersey representatives to the Center For American
Nursing, the workplace advocacy center of the American
Nurses’ Association. Linda is a member of
the Board of the New Jersey Collaborating Center
and has been appointed to the Task Force on Health
Care Professional Responsibility and Reporting.
She is a member of several professional nursing
organizations and is certified in both Med-surg
nursing and Nursing Professional Development.
Linda has a diverse background in nursing in clinical
and teaching with a little management thrown in.
This gives her a broad view of the needs of nurses
across the spectrum. A graduate of the Mountainside
Hospital School of Nursing, Linda went to Rutgers
University for her BSN and obtained her MA in Nursing
from New York University. She has worked in medical
surgical nursing and critical care. Her teaching
background is in both the academic setting at William
Paterson University in New Jersey and in continuing
education. She is currently the Education Specialist
for the med-surg team in the Department of Nursing
Education at Hackensack University Medical Center.
In her current role she oversees all continuing
education for the medical surgical nursing specialty
and is involved in a variety of special projects.
Linda is active in the community including President
of the Board of Health in her town, the Borough
of Bloomingdale. She is a parish nurse, co-coordinator
of the homeless program, and works with Hispanic
Outreach - all through St. Anthony’s Church
in Butler.
Dr. Julie Bliss, RN, Director of the Nursing Department,
William Paterson University
Julie Beshore Bliss, Ed.D., R.N., is a professor of nursing and chairperson of the Department of Nursing at William Paterson University. A specialist in health care informatics—the management and processing of data, information, and knowledge—she also writes and speaks on a variety of issues, including the nursing shortage, the nursing faculty shortage, and nursing honors programs.
Bliss is the recipient of numerous grants and holds membership in Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society of nursing, the American Nurses Association, the New Jersey State Nurses Association, and the American Medical Informatics Association. Her articles have appeared in Journal of Professional Nursing, Computers in Nursing, and Continuing Education in Nursing, among others. Bliss is a member of the board of directors of ARC of Somerset County.
A member of the William Paterson faculty since 1989, Bliss is a graduate of University of North Colorado. She received her master’s and doctoral degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University, and studied nursing informatics at New York University. Bliss is a resident of Montvale.
