Hispanic Healthcare in Crisis discusses the difficulties
the Latino community face in obtaining access to quality medical
care. This show looks at such issues as:
- Language and
cultural barriers
- Immigration
status
- The high rate
of uninsured and underinsured in the Latino community
- The neglect
of basic medical care which can lead to more serious medical
problems
- Falling prey
to superstitions and fraudulent schemes
- The absolute
importance of and need for self-advocacy
In Hispanic
Healthcare in Crisis, we put a face on these problems.
Meet people who are experiencing difficulties in the healthcare
system and those who are working to help people get the services
they need. Guests on the program inclure Dr. Rodrigo Cardenas,
physician and editor of the national health magazine, La Salud
Hispana; Lillian Montalvo, nurse and Health Services Coordinator
of Ironbound Community Center, Inc. located in Newark, NJ;
and Dr. Thomas Ortiz, Director of Forest Hills Family Health
Associates in Newark. Although this is a New Jersey program,
the problems we focus on exist in Latino communities throughout
the country.
But Hispanic
Healthcare in Crisis does not spend time dwelling on problems.
Instead it focuses on solutions - practical, workable suggestions.
The program encourages members of the Latino community to
use their local community centers, clinics and social service
agencies to obtain more information concerning their healthcare
and health insurance needs. It advises them on what steps
to take to obtain the services and programs that they may
be entitled to receive. Self-advocacy is emphasized as an
extremely important tool for people.
