Lisa Bair Miller
Line Producer
Lisa Bair Miller has been has a part of the NJN team for 22 years beginning as a studio/field sound, lighting, and camera operator. She then developed skills in graphics and editing for News and Documentaries. Lisa has gone on to produce and edit documentaries and special projects since 1993 for local and national projects, has coordinated many outreach projects for NJN and, is also NJN's Website director. She also has been the voice of NJN for 20 years and hosts NJNs on-air fundraising drives. Lisa also freelances voice and on-camera for corporate and commercial industry.
2002-2003
This past year Lisa produced two programs, a one year look at the world trade center attack titled America Together: New Jersey Voices and an entertainment special with Ray Charles saluting the GardenState. America Together, a one hour documentary looked at how NJ reacted from day one, with volunteerism, events, ceremonies, through art and thoughts towards the future. A statewide archive, collected through NJN was a strong visual part of the program. This archive is available online at www.njn.net/community . A Garden State Salute with Ray Charles, taped at the war Memorial in Trenton, NJ has been nominated for a Mid Atlantic Emmy.
2000-01
NJN recently won the CEN SCHUMAKER Award and the Philadelphia Press Association Award for comprehensive Election 2000 Outreach Campaign, where Lisa produced a comprehensive web site for adults and teens, and a National Emmy Nomination for Community Service. Lisa worked with teens from Kids Voting New Jersey to produced on-air and on-web video segments expressing opinions about national and local elections. NJN’s Democracy Project 2000 was part of the national PBS Democracy Project that invited Americans to become more educated and involved in the democratic process. As the Web Director for NJN, Lisa developed an extensive Election Web site www.njn.net/election2000 designed to attract current, new and young voters. A special section of the Web site was dedicated to youth voters which incorporated, video/audio streaming, and written essays from Kids Voting New Jersey, Jim Lehrer News Hour, Center For Youth Policy and Programs and other partners.
1999-2000
Lisa won a national AWRT (American Women in Radio and Television) Gracie award, a Grand award for Public Service from the Philadelphia Press Association and an EEN (Eastern Educational Network) honor for her work as Producer and Outreach Coordinator on NJN’s Seeking Solutions: V-free NJ Campaign as part of the PBS Democracy Project. Working with NJN's award winning Production team, Lisa produced, wrote and edited a half-hour documentary highlighting successful anti-violence efforts in New Jersey schools and communities produced an interactive Website that received thousands of hits, PSA campaign highlighting student projects and opinions and an anti-violence tip school poster that was distributed to NJ Schools and Libraries statewide.
1998-1999
Lisa won a Philadelphia Press Association Award and was nominated for an Emmy, as outreach coordinator and project producer for NJN’s 98’-99’ statewide volunteer recruitment effort. Lend a Hand For New Jersey’s Kids, a strong outreach campaign, that afforded the audience a statewide volunteer resource guide and a live two-hour help-a-thon, hosted by Joe Piscopo, highlighted nonprofit organizations using volunteers to work with kids. The campaign also included a documentary about state and national community volunteer efforts, Volunteer for Change which she co-produced and wrote with NJN’s Production Executive, Janice Selinger. This effort brought in the promise of over 40,000 hours of volunteer time and thousands of requests for the Lend a Hand resource guide.
1996-1997
In fall of ’97 Lisa traveled to Portugal to help produce and edit the Emmy nominated documentary Ironbound Ties to Portugal about Portuguese immigrants living in the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ. Ironbound Ties To Portugal gave viewers an in depth look at an economically thriving, socially strong Portuguese community in the midst of Newark’s wrenching poverty and social distress. Special attention was paid to the music recorded for the program. NJN’s award winning Camera, Sound and production team brought all elements together to produce a winning program. Ironbound Ties To Portugal was said to be NJN’s most successful local production during an NJN fundraising drive..
Lisa also produced, edited and wrote the documentary, Steamin’ Demon: A Rebirth about the USS Algol, a Liberty ship sunk for the Artificial Reef Program in NJ. Never before seen archival footage and crew interviews helped to give this story a more personal tone. Lisa, a PADI certified scuba diver, along with reef expert Bill Figley and EPA technical crew, visited the USS Algol in its new environment, 120 feet beneath the waves, videotaping the ships development into a thriving artificial reef. American Program Service (APS) distributed the Steamin’ Demon program in the USA and internationally.
Lisa won a Mid-Atlantic Emmy for producing and editing the documentary The Meadowlands at 20 in 1996. The program celebrated the history of the NJ Meadowlands Sports Complex. She was also honored for her work as editor and production coordinator on Violence Hits Homes, an Emmy winning program, and live national PBS call-in show addressing the brutal subject of Domestic Violence.
1994-1995
Other Emmy nominations include Lisa’s work in a volunteer recruitment effort called Help Wanted. This National and Local PBS Help-a-thon, hosted by Sesame Street’s Roscoe Orman, was designed to recruit volunteers to help kids steer away from the violence in their lives and on the streets. NJN participated on a local and national level for this 1995 campaign.
During her career as a field sound and cameraperson for NJN News, Lisa won a Champion Tuck award for sound in the news documentary, AT&T: Breaking up is Hard to Do about the deregulation of the telephone business in the early 1980's.
