This project, including
the documentary and the teacher guide, has been a cooperative
endeavor between NJN Public Television and the New Jersey
Commission on Holocaust Education.

Learning about
the Holocaust is a field of study that never ends. This historical
event is a prime example of prejudice taken to the extreme.
The study of the Holocaust is based upon different approaches.
We can approach the subject through classroom lessons as well
as first hand experiences. Knowledge is obtained, yet there
are unanswered questions. The more we study the more we realize
the complexities of the issues. There are simple questions
but with complex answers. This documentary is a first hand
approach: a journey to Germany, Poland and Israel to study
the Holocaust and its meaning for today. Highlighted are scholars
of the Holocaust, whose expert commentary enhances the documentary.
The purpose of this guide is to assist educators in preparing
their students to watch Lessons for Life. The documentary
can be shown as an introductory lesson for Holocaust/genocide
studies at any other time during the unit, as deemed appropriate
by the teacher. It is designed for grades 5-12 and undergraduate
college students. Most important, the students should be prepared
to view the documentary. There are suggested questions to
be asked prior to and after viewing the documentary. Classroom
activities may be adapted to different grade levels, time
lines, a map, and resource materials are available to enhance
the lessons.
