camelot
The
Paper Mill Playhouse has taken on the rarely
revived Camelot, Lerner and Loewe's legendary
musical about King Arthur and the Knights
of the Round Table. In this State of the
Arts feature, we'll talk about how the story
of King Arthur and how his dream of Utopia
relates to our own troubled times. Viewers
will go behind the scenes to explore the
daunting production challenges that Paper
Mill is facing, such as larger-than-life
sets and costumes that include real chain
mail.

K-12
New
Jersey is one of only a few states to have
core curriculum standards for teaching the
visual and performing arts in grades K through
12. Nevertheless, the old story remains
true - the arts are still the first thing
cut when budgets get tight. Keeping music
and art in public schools has meant being
creative, with each district crafting its
own approach. Increasingly, non-profits
- museums, symphonies, even groups dedicated
only to arts education - have stepped in
to make the experience richer. But school
budgets and arts funding are tight this
year - meaning that programs next year might
be hit doubly hard.
State
of the Arts visits education programs offered
by the Haddonfield Symphony Orchestra, Appel
Farm Arts and Music Center, and the NJ Teen
Arts Festival. These are examples of the
many programs offered by non-profit arts
organizations throughout the state. Also
featured are the basic classes in music
and art provided by the Trenton Public School
District, and an interview with NJ School
Boards Association executive director, Edwina
Lee.

paper
hearts, organic tissues
Matt
Schwede, an artist who lives in Hoboken
and has a studio in Jersey City, has been
called "an Edward Scissorhands of sorts."
A craftsman of uncanny ability, his work
combines science, art, humor, and poetry
to explore the strength and frailty of the
human condition.
In
a new exhibit at the Hunterdon Museum of
Art, his pieces "Wall of Hearts,"
"100 Lungs," and "Vein Sacs"
explore the human body, the circulatory
system in particular. These organs are accurately
portrayed, but also creatively designed
to open the imagination to see them as more
than just body parts.

njpac
jubilation choir
State
of the Arts profiles NJPAC's spirited, community-based
gospel choir as they celebrate the launch
of their first CD, which features solo tracks
by Queen Latifah, Cissy Houston and gospel
legend Albertina Walker. But big names aside,
the real purpose of this group is the joy
of fellowship and creating a ministry through
their music. Viewers visit a rehearsal and
see how these accomplished singers - many
of them professional musicians - who range
in age from 18 to 85 come together as one
under the leadership of music director Rev.
Stefanie Minatee.
