aljira / a center for contemporary art

After nearly two years of being shut down for relocation and renovation, Aljira, New Jersey's renowned contemporary art center, is open for business. Located in the heart of the arts district in downtown Newark, the new and expanded Aljira, under the direction of artist and founder Victor Davson, will continue its mission of mounting cutting-edge art exhibits. State of the Arts gives you a peek of the opening exhibit, Moved by Awe, which features the work of the 18 artists from Aljira's in-house fellowship program. Also covered in this segment is a closer look at the art of Victor Davson, who as owner of the gallery has every right to show his own work, but never does in deference to the artists he seeks to help.

echad / carolyn dorfman dance company

echad"Echad" or "one" is an intensely personal work in which choreographer Carolyn Dorfman explores the balance between the good of the community and the freedom of the individual: "At both extremes," she says, "lies evil." State of the Arts shows how images of the holocaust and original music by composer Greg Wall combined to inspire Dorfman in one of her most moving works to date.

manchild in the promised land

Claude Brown, the author of the classic Harlem coming-of-age novel Manchild in the Promised Land, died in 2002 at age 64. Before he died Brown had the chance to see actor Joseph Edward portray his story on stage in a remarkable one-man play. Adapted by Edward and director Wynn Handman, Manchild in the Promised Land has become a favorite at Trenton's Passage Theatre, returning in 2002 for its third straight run.

small towns, black lives

small towns, black livesSouthern New Jersey is home to several historically black communities now featured in an exhibit and book, both called "Small Towns, Black Lives." Over a ten-year period, Stockton College professor and photographer Wendel A. White created documentary photos and text that provide a complex look at the people, businesses, historic landmarks, landscapes, and other features that make up communities such as Whitesboro and Lawnside. State of the Arts goes on location to interview White, as well as some of the subjects of his photographs.
