The
Art of Identity
In
honor of NJNs Empowerment Summit IV - Diversity
week, "State of the Arts" features four artists
inspired by individual identity, whether that be ethnic,
cultural, or in the case of Jersey City artist Joseph
Grigely, about living and communicating as a deaf
person. Grigelys art is made of scraps of paper,
old napkins, ticket stubs with scribbled words, fragments
of conversations past.
For Millville
sculptor Willie Cole, who explores his African
ancestry, an old iron conjures up the shape of slave
ships and a legacy of servitude.

Artist
Juan Sanchez calls himself a Nuyorican,
meaning a Puerto Rican New Yorker, and his art
is all about his unique ethnic identity.

Chinese American
choreographer Nai-Ni Chen creates dances for
her Fort Lee based dance company that mix ancient Chinese
with American contemporary.
