NJN Awarded Grant to Create Math Website for Parents and Young Children

Statewide – The NJN Foundation is pleased to announce that it has received a $50,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to fund The Parents + Young Children = Successful Math Students project that will support the development of mathematical thinking in pre-school children.  The NJN Foundation is the fund-raising arm for NJN Public Television and Radio.

The grant will allow NJN to work with noted early childhood math researchers, Dr. Herb Ginsburg of Columbia Teachers College and Dr. Barbrina Ertle of Adelphia University, to create a dynamic website for parents and caregivers, designed to help them understand and support their children’s mathematical development through activities, literature, and other resources.

NJN’s parent/caregiver website will meet a need identified by the Committee on Early Mathematics of the National Research Council to expose children, particularly from disadvantaged homes, to more opportunities to learn mathematics in early childhood settings and through everyday experiences in the home and in their community.  This program will build on NJN’s Big Math for Little Kids Teacher Training Project.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation is dedicated to forming partnerships with key community stakeholders, and investing in those relationships and organizations in order to identify and address critical needs in our communities.

The Bank of America is a strong supporter of NJN’s early childhood program and has provided funding for NJN to provide learning opportunities for teachers, parent, and caregivers that include regional full-day and week-long teacher training institutes, focused on the informed use of digital media in the classroom to transform teaching and learning, as well as early literacy workshops in day care centers.
