AND THE FINALISTS ARE!
NJN Hispanic Youth Showcase 2009

Statewide – When the curtain rises at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Victoria Theater on May 22nd at 7 PM, representatives from Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania will take the stage in one of the most highly acclaimed talent search competitions in the tri-state area.

The talented hopefuls will test their vocal chords, dance moves and instrumental training in nine Categories. Two winners will be selected in each category for solo dancers, vocalists and instrumentalists. One winner in the duo category and one winner in group competition will be selected as champions. They will be competing for $500 scholarships in honor of the King of Latin Music, Tito Puente: the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz, international dance star, Beatriz Rodriguez and the king of partner dancing, Cuban Pete.

It took months of screening numerous applications, videotapes and auditions to select this talented cavalcade of young stars. On this one night, 16 winners will go home with scholarships to pursue their dreams, a free trip to Six Flags Great Adventure and much more.

NJN will air a television special honoring the Showcase champions during the summer of 2009. The television broadcast, as well as this year’s competition at NJPAC, will be dedicated to the great Broadway Star Chita Rivera and Tina Ramirez, founder and artistic director of the world famous Ballet Hispanico. In addition, the Showcase will serve as a spring board for a campaign promoting teen safety on the road. Honored on stage will be the parents of Rebeka Verea, a talented teenager who died in a car crash four hours after her high school graduation in 2005. Since then over 10,000 teenagers have heard Rebeka’s parents’ message to protect themselves and care for each other on the road.

The NJN Hispanic Youth Showcase is the longest running Latino children’s program on a PBS station. It has received an Emmy Award and multiple Emmy nominations. The national Arts Council Co-op has selected the program as one of the top six children’s programs in the nation. Past and present participants have appeared in Hollywood movies, Broadway, Star Search, American idol, the Apollo, “Sabado Gigante” and international commercials.

In the 2009, seventeen year old Grammy Award nominee, Karin Pasian will be honored with the Joseph F. Unanue Outstanding Showcase Alumni Award presented by Goya Foods Inc. The show opens with a surprise performance by recent national dance participants representing New Jersey’s County College of Morris.

The NJN Hispanic Youth Showcase 2009 is made possible by the following sponsors: The New Jersey State Council on the Arts; Public Service Electric & Gas; Goya Foods, Inc.
