NJN Public Television Nominated for
Four Regional Emmy Awards

STATEWIDE – NJN Public Television is pleased to announce that it received four Emmy Award nominations from The New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Science. Nominations took place in New York City on February 7, 2008.

NJN’s documentary A Greener Greater Newark received a nomination in the category of Environment. Bob Szuter was the writer/producer, and Elizabeth G. Christopherson and Janice Selinger were executive producers. The 30-minute special looks at Newark residents who are finding ways to create park and garden space, beautify what space they have, and encourage teachers and children to find ways to explore science and environmental education. The program features two non-profit organizations — the Greater Newark Conservancy and The Trust for Public Land — that exemplify these efforts and work to lend these individuals a hand. Funding for A Greener Greater Newark was made possible by Judy and Walter Shipley, and by PSE&G.

Death Penalty, an episode of Due Process, NJN’s award-winning weekly series on law and justice issues, was nominated in the category of Politics/Government. Sandra King was the executive producer/managing editor; Henrietta S. Parker, coordinating producer; Raymond Brown, host; Ian Turlin, associate producer; and Jeff Friedman, director. The program traces the history of the New Jersey death penalty, and provides passionate voices from both sides of the issue. Although New Jersey had a death penalty when the program aired, legislation that replaced capital punishment with life in prison without parole was signed into law by Governor Corzine on December 17, 2007. Due Process, launched in 1996, is made possible by major funding from the New Jersey State Bar Foundation with funding from the IOLTA Fund of the New Jersey Bar, and the Fund for New Jersey.

NJN’s weekly arts program, State of the Arts, received a nomination for its episode Old is New in the category of Magazine Program. Producers Christopher Benincasa, Amber Edwards, Eric Schultz and series producer Susan Wallner all contributed to the program. Nila Aronow was executive producer. The program, which deals with how the past is reinvented, includes a famous documentary film that was transformed into “Grey Gardens,” a hit Broadway musical; old barns that find new life; old comic strips that are honored by new artists; and an old town that finds a new engine of economic revitalization in the arts. State of the Arts is NJN’s longest running series, celebrated its 25th season in 2007 and has earned 28 Regional Emmy Awards. Funding for State of the Arts is provided by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

NJN also received a nomination for Sandra King in the category of On-camera Talent: Reporter – Special Assignment. Ms. King is writer, correspondent, managing editor and executive producer for Due Process, now in its 13th season. Over the years, she has been a senior correspondent for NJN News, a producer and host for numerous NJN specials, and producer/director for prize-winning NJN documentaries.

The New York Emmy Award winners will be announced during the 51st annual awards ceremony at the Marriott Marquis in New York City on Sunday, April 6, 2008.
