The “Greening” of a City – A Greener Greater Newark on NJN
Thursday, May 24 at 8:30 pm and Tuesday, May 29 at 6:30 pm

Trenton, NJ – Cities across the nation are recognizing the importance of green spaces and their contribution to the quality of urban living. From Los Angeles to Chicago, city dwellers are taking to the streets to restore parks, protect open spaces, and build gardens. In New Jersey, people in the city of Newark are working to reverse decades of neglect by “greening” their personal and shared spaces – from their homes and city blocks to their neighborhood parks. A Greener Greater Newark, a new documentary special from NJN, looks at the grassroots efforts of the Greater Newark Conservancy and The Trust for Public Land and how their actions produce long-term benefits reaching far beyond physical landscape improvement. Shot in a variety of neighborhoods throughout the city, this half-hour program, airing on NJN Public Television Thursday, May 24 at 8:30 pm with a rebroadcast on Tuesday, May 29 at 6:30 pm, profiles residents who have built community gardens and participate in neighborhood beautification programs, and the block leaders who have joined together with schools and other organizations to take back small but valuable park space.

Produced by Emmy Award-winner producer Bob Szuter with executive producers Elizabeth Christopherson and Janice Selinger, A Greener Greater Newark is a visually compelling look at a side of Newark not often seen in the media, one that features the citizens of Newark as they take important steps to building civic pride. The documentary is shot in high definition with narration by Desirée Taylor of NJN News and original music by award-winning composer Robert Sands.

Funding for A Greener Greater Newark has been made possible by Judy and Walter Shipley, and by PSE&G. For more information, visit A Greener Greater Newark at njn.net.
