Liberian Democracy: A Journey Back Home
An Another View Special on NJN

Airs Tuesday, October 17 at 6:30 pm and Friday, October 20 at 11:30 pm

Trenton, NJ – Sia Nyorkor grew up hearing stories from her Liberian parents of the civil wars that ravaged their native homeland. For over 25 years, bloodshed filled the streets of this African nation, as child soldiers fought the wars of power-hungry politicians. A procession of overthrown governments left economic despair and hundreds of thousands dead in its wake. Displaced from their homes, many Liberians fled the country. But now they are returning to their homeland, eager to cast a vote for democracy in the country’s first democratic election since 1997. NJN takes a look at this phenomenon on Liberian Democracy: A Journey Back Home, an Another View special airing on Tuesday, October 17 at 6:30 pm with a rebroadcast on Friday, October 20 at 11:30 pm on NJN.

In Liberian Democracy, Another View coordinating producer Sia Nyorkor travels to Liberia to put a human face on the historic events taking place in this emerging democracy. Through the lens of her video-journal, Nyorkor shares with viewers her travels around the country and her first meeting with her Liberian relatives. Shot completely on location by Nyorkor herself, this personal portrait includes an interview with newly elected Liberian president Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and provides insight into the many challenges facing the people of Liberia.

A story of war, faith and democracy, Liberian Democracy: A Journey Back Home is an up-close and intimate look at the trials faced by a people determined to make their country the pride of Africa. This program launches Another View’s 20th season – a season that will present an innovative look at the Black family in today’s world.
