William J. Marino
is President and Chief Executive Officer of Horizon Blue Cross
and Blue Shield of New Jersey, Inc., the state's largest health
insurer, providing coverage for over 2.2 million people. Bill
joined Horizon BCBSNJ as Senior Vice President of Health Industry
Services in January 1992, responsible for all aspects of Managed
Care operations in New Jersey, as well as Market Research,
Product Development, Provider Relations and Health Care Management.
He became President and CEO in January 1994. He has 30 years
of experience in the health and employee benefits field, primarily
in managed care, marketing and management. Before joining
Horizon BCBSNJ, Bill was Vice President of Regional Group
Operations for New York and Connecticut for the Prudential,
capping a 23-year career with them. Bill is a member of the
Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Blue Cross
Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). He also chairs the Inter-Plan
Operating Committee and is a member of the Emerging Issues
Committee of BCBSA. In September 1999, Bill was appointed
to the Board of Directors of the Health Insurance Association
of America and the National Institute for Health Care Management.
He is a member and Past Chairman of the Board of Directors
and Executive Committee of the Regional Business Partnership.
Bill also serves as a member of the Board for the New Jersey
Network (NJN) Foundation and is Chairman of the NJN Community
Advisory Council. On July 1, 1998, Bill became Chairman of
the Board of Trustees of St. Peter's College. He is also a
member of the Board of the Newark Museum, the New Jersey State
Chamber of Commerce, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the
Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey, the Teach Our Children
Foundation and TeamStaff, Inc. Bill is Past Chairman of the
Board of Trustees for the United Way of Essex and West Hudson,
and was the organization's 1993-94 Campaign Chairman. He previously
sat on the Chief Justice Committee on Efficiency to review
the functioning of the New Jersey judicial system and has
served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Kessler
Institute for Rehabilitation, Inc., and of the Board of Directors
and Executive Committee of the New York Business Group on
Health. In addition, Bill was a member of the Board of the
New York State HMO Conference, a member of Fairleigh Dickinson
University's Council of Presidential Advisors and served on
hospital boards. Bill is a recipient of the 1997 Ellis Island
Medal of Honor. He graduated from St. Peter's College in Jersey
City with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. Bill
and his wife, Paula, have four children and reside in Morris
